Filter fields

You can filter the result set by providing the following query parameters:

  • name -- Filter by name, exact.
  • slug -- Filter by page slug. Supports the standard lookup types
  • region -- Filter by region. Allows for chained filtering on all of the filters available on the region resource, e.g. region__slug.

And the usual set of historical filter fields:

  • history_user - filter by the user resource of the editor, if user was logged in. Allows for chained filtering on all of the filters available on the user resource, e.g. history_user__username.
  • history_user_ip - filter by the IP address of the editor.
  • history_date - filter by history date. Supports the standard lookup types
  • history_type - filter by history type id, exact.

Ordering

You can order the result set by providing the ordering query parameter with the value of one of:

  • slug
  • history_date

You can reverse ordering by using the - sign, e.g. -slug.

It closed in 1971, and was later converted into low income housing.</p>\n<h3>\n\tHotel and Music Venue</h3>\n<p>\n\t<span class=\"image_frame image_frame_border image_right\"><img src=\"_files/ohrphoto.oaklandhotels.020.jpg\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 288px;\"><span style=\"width: 400px;\" class=\"image_caption\">c.1935 <sup>8</sup></span></span></p>\n<p>\n\tThe hotel opened May 18, 1930, owned by the Eastbay Hotel Corporation. Axel Bern (one of the principal shareholders of the corporation) was was the manager. It had 150 hotel rooms, and 25 apartments. <sup>5</sup></p>\n<p>\n\tThe <strong>Zanzibar Club</strong> opened at the hotel in 1941. <sup>7</sup></p>\n<p>\n\tAccording to California Hotel Live! it was a whites-only hotel from the opening. It became one of the few hotels where Blacks could perform in 1949, and ended its discrimination policies against guests when new owners took over on January 16, 1953.</p>\n<p class=\"indent1\">\n\t<em><span style=\"\">A grand \"reopening\" was held with invited guests that included Oakland-born comedian <a href=\"Eddie%20%22Rochester%22%20Anderson\">Eddie \"Rochester\" Anderson</a>, boxing champion Joe Louis and acclaimed singer Lena Horne. The hotel attracted many high profile black visitors to Oakland. At that time, it was the only full-service hotel that welcomed black people in the East Bay. </span></em><sup>6</sup></p>\n<p>\n\tIn addition to being a venue for blues and jazz, the hotel also had a Big Mambo and Afro Cuban scene in the late 1940s and 50s. <a href=\"Pete%20Escovedo\">Pete Escovedo</a> got his start playing there. It was popular with both jazz and Latin music lovers. Other performers like Carlos Federico, Benny Velarde and Cal Tjader performed at the California hotel.</p>\n<p>\n\tOver time the hotel fell into disrepair and that, coupled with the impact of the freeways (<a href=\"MacArthur%20Freeway\">I-580</a> is less than 100' away), the decline in the neighborhood, and financial difficulties caused the closure of the hotel in 1971.</p>\n<h3>\n\tLow Income Housing</h3>\n<p>\n\tThe hotel was converted into low income housing by the Oakland Community Housing, Inc. (OCHI) in the 1980s. After OCHI ceased operations in 2007, residents refused attempts to evict them from the hotel. A trustee was appointed by the court who continued to operate the hotel so residents could stay.</p>\n<p>\n\tIn 2011 the California Hotel was purchased by the <a href=\"East%20Bay%20Asian%20Local%20Development%20Corporation\">East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation</a> (EBALDC) which renovated the building with $18.4 million in city redevelopment funds and private donations. On July 25, 2012 local officials gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking for the renovation of the historic California Hotel.</p>\n<h3>\n\tBuilding History</h3>\n<p>\n\tThe building was designed by <a href=\"Clay%20N.%20Burrell\">Clay Burrell</a>, and opened May 18, 1930, <sup>4</sup> near the start of the Great Depression.</p>\n<p>\n\tA 3/4 page advertorial in 1930 invited the public to an open house. It touted various businesses that were involved in the construction, including hardware from <a href=\"Maxwell%20Hardware\">Maxwell Hardware</a>, Marshall and Stearns <a href=\"wall%20beds\">hide-a-beds</a>, and Wonderlite (SF) which made the neon sign, as well as businesses to be involved in the running of the hotel, including the <a href=\"Union%20Pacific%20Laundry\">Union Pacific Laundry</a>, <a href=\"Hansen%20Coffee\">Hansen Coffee</a>, and the <a href=\"Remar%20Bakery\">Remar Bakery</a>. <sup>5</sup></p>\n<p>\n\t<span class=\"image_frame image_frame_border\"><img src=\"_files/Oakland_Tribune_Sun__Oct_27__1929%20-%20california%20hotel.jpg\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 319px;\"><span style=\"width: 400px;\" class=\"image_caption\">1929 <sup>2</sup></span></span><span class=\"image_frame image_frame_border\"><img src=\"_files/Oakland_Tribune_Sun__May_18__1930%20-%20California%20Hotel%20opening.jpg\" style=\"width: 335px; height: 319px;\"><span style=\"width: 335px;\" class=\"image_caption\">1930 <sup>5</sup></span></span></p>\n<p>\n\tIn 1988 the California Hotel was added to the <a href=\"National%20Register%20of%20Historic%20Places%20(Oakland)\">National Register of Historic Places</a>.</p>\n<h3>\n\tBusinesses</h3>\n<p>\n\tIn addition to the hotel lobby and a banquet hall (the \"Gold Room\"), the 1951 Sanborn map shows a restaurant, nightclub, and drug store on the ground floor. Addresses include 3443, 3445, 3447, 3457, 3459, 3463, and the hotel at 3501. The Sanborn map also shows a gas station in front of the hotel on the point that used to exist between San Pablo Ave. and Chestnut St.</p>\n<p>\n\t<span class=\"image_frame image_frame_border\"><img src=\"_files/00727_01_1951-9-0009%20-%20california%20hotel.jpg\" style=\"width: 657px;
