Brief Overview:

Tucson’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is non-profit museum in downtown Tucson. MOCA was established in 1997 but did not find its current home until 2009. Housed in what was previously Tucson’s Firehouse #1 on Church Avenue, the museum board has made renovations to the interior of the brutalist building. This building was created in 1973 by neo-brutalist William Wilde and served as a Fire Station until 2009, a total of 63 years; Fire Station 1 nearby and is within walking distance. The building is leased at a nominal value of $1 but extensive renovations were required to ensure the building was available for exhibitions. The museum board is responsible for continued upkeep costs. The original building was commissioned by the City of Tucson in 1967 alongside the Police Headquarters on 270 S Stone Avenue.

These renovations allow for small scale exhibits inside and larger art installations housed in the Great Hall. The Great Hall repurposes the old firehouse’s garage to a large gallery. The Great Hall retains the roll up doors to open into a Covid-safe open-air installation room that blends with the historic neighborhood on the north side of the building. Artists have previously included the windows and building perimeter as part of exhibit space. The high roof in the garage opens the space further or can allow exhibits to be feel dwarfed based on artist design. The founders spent many years itinerant or with short term leases in warehouse space, concert venues, and other non-traditional museum locations around Tucson before finding their current home.

What is Contemporary Art:

MOCA exhibits and mission are focused on contemporary art. Contemporary art includes works by living artists in any medium. Works have no unifying focus, style, medium, or theory other than the artists involved are creating art within the lifetime of most viewers. Works can be traditional or new mediums and can be singular or multi-medium in creation. Often, these works are avant-garde or addressing social issues including and not limited to race, gender, sexuality, justice, and class consciousness.

MOCA Exhibitions and Community Impact

MOCA exhibits and hosts multimedia installations which can include sound, video, community involvement, and touch in addition to historical mediums like photography, sculpture, paintings, et cetera. These exhibits are sourced from global artists or fostered by artist in residency programs. Exhibits and programs are often focused on international identity or binational border issues The site also hosts pieces or talks that explore the specific space, explorations in color and many other exhibits/programs. Exhibits are limited run; generally, about 4 or 5 months at a time. The museum may shut down temporarily while transitioning from exhibit to exhibit. Temporary closures are listed on their website.

According to the MOCAs 2020 Annual Report, in 2020 they had over 5,000 youth in educational programs during 2020. Current educational programs are both direct action programs visiting Schools(MOCA Satellite) and mixed in-person/online hybrid programs. MOCA Satellite serves TUSD, Amphi, Marana, Flowing Wells, and Sunnyside. These satellite programs are mobile art bringing artists to Schools as a supplement to teacher programs. Title I schools, schools with 40% of enrollment being considered Low Income, have costs covered from funding provided by the Windgate Foundation and Robert Barber Fund. The majority of these programs are youth oriented, some are single night engagements for discussion of art and art history.
