From their page: "The first official Archive of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) was launched in 2005 thanks to a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), a program of the National Archives that promotes the preservation and use of America's documentary heritage essential to understanding our democracy, history, and culture. The DSO Archives are a permanent repository for artifacts and records documenting the history of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra dating back to at least 1887. The mission of the Archives is to collect, organize, and preserve collections; to provide access and support for reference and research; and to provide useful documentation of the policies, people, achievements and events of the DSO. The Archives serve to promote understanding of the DSO's rich heritage to the metro Detroit area, as well as throughout the world.
Helping direct the long-term vision for the DSO Archives are DSO Historian and retired DSO bassoonist, Paul Ganson, and Dr. Phil Mason, Wayne State University Distinguished Professor of History, Emeritus. Additionally, qualified interns and volunteers will be working in the archives to assist in making the historical documents available for research use.
