About
Mary Washington began in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women and was named Mary Washington College in 1938 after Mary_Ball_Washington, George Washington's mother. The school became a women's college member of the University of Virginia in 1944. The school went coed in 1970 and was granted a charter as a separate college in 1972. The college became a University in March 2004.
