History

Originally, the location of the Old Town Draught House was called the Spring Garden Bar and Grill. Once Natty Greene's Brewery took over the property in 1996, they renamed the bar to its Middle English-inspired name. The name is pronounced as it would in Old English, making the word “draught” be pronounced as “draft.”

Connection to UNCG

Matt Lipp, the manager and owner of the bar, said in an interview that the bar is located on the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s campus and is the only campus with a liquor license on all the 17 schools in the North Carolina system. The owner also added that many of the clientele are students and faculty.

Though the bar is located on a college campus, it does not have the same atmosphere as other college bars. Lipp thinks the bar is a casual locale with great dining and drink options.

Lipp appreciates the help he receives from the UNCG's police and parking departments for all the work they do for him.

Beer Selection & Food

The owner said the beer selection changes every night, giving some variation for the bar's regulars. It also serves a lot of beer from local brewing companies including Natty Greene's, the Foothills and Sierra Nevada Brewing. For the full selection of beer follow this link.

Yet, Lipp said, 50 percent of the bar's profits come from the food, and The Old Town Draught House's biggest seller is the Chicken Philly. Other options include American pub cuisine including:

  • Wings

  • Hot Sandwiches

  • Chicken Fingers

  • Fries

  • Beer-battered vegetables

  • Salads

  • And much more
