SAIL REGATTA WON BY HALE

Bill Hale of Lake Clear flashed his red and white Sailfish twice around the triangular racing course in front of the Lake Clear Inn in Saturday's first running at the Lake Clear Regatta to win handily in just over 34 minutes. Hale garnered 16 and a quarter points in the 15-boat race.

The exciting race was punctuated by numerous capsizings, which saw even the winning boat twice bottom up in the water. The estimated 20-mile wind provided fast and tricky sailing for the racers.

The order of boats finishing behind Hale is as follows: Second, Louis George (SL); third. Dick Pine. (SL); fourth, Ted Prime, (LP); fifth, Bill Harvey, (SL); sixth, John Evans, (Cranberry Lake); seventh, Joe Baker. (Hoel Pond); eighth. Carter Lockwood, (LP); ninth, Jack Peightal, (SL); tenth, Dick Merkel, (SL); eleventh. Roland Beattie, (LP); 12th, Andy Lang (SL); 13th, Sue Griffetti, (); 14th, Carpenter, (Titus Lake); and 15th, Dr. Keet, (Lake Colby). The winning skipper, Hale, was awarded a silver bowl at ceremonies immediately following the race by sponsor Jack Roosa of the Lake Clear Inn, and Race Commodore Morrison Brigham, who expressed his pleasure over the sportsmanship displayed in the race which went off without a single disqualification or skipper's protest in spite of the fact that several inadvertent "fouls" on the part of inexperienced skippers were observed by the committee.

Jack Roosa, proprietor of Lake Clear Inn, sponsor of the race, expressed the hope that the Regatta will become an annual affair, noting that a 15-boat entry list, and upwards of 100 spectators seem to ensure ample interest in the event.

Mr. Roosa also expressed a special vote of thanks to Gailord Ray [sic] and Bob Hickok of The Stockade Trading Post at Fish Creek, for providing two safety patrol boats, with motors and life-saving equipment, for use during the race.
