The water crisis in Flint, Michigan has been plaguing the community since 2014. This unfortunate event came to fruition when the city of Flint changed the water source of the city from Lake Huron and Detroit River to a less costly water source. Two problems arose from this change. First, the lead pipes that transported the water to the city were leaching lead into the water source. Second, the water was not being treated which further enhanced the toxicity of the water. Because of these errors, almost 100,000 residents were exposed to high levels of lead in the drinking water, causing major health problems in the area. Michigan Department of Environmental Quality told the populous "to relax" when concerns about the water were brought to their attention, but after new studies were conducted, the evidence was undeniable. The people of Flint, Michigan were being poisoned by the high content of lead in the water supply.
