Pennsylvania officials state that they have observed an 18 percent decrease in opioid-related deaths in the entire state, and a integral part of the drop has been effectively sharing data among agencies. In 2017 almost 5,500 people in Pennsylvania died from causes related to opioid use. In 2018, that number dropped to about 4,500, according to information from the state. This decrease in opioid-related deaths — which also includes those who died from diseases spread through needle use, such as HIV and hepatitis C — is the result of a mosaic of work across the state.
