Highway 24 (California State Route 24) extends from Oakland to I-680 in Walnut Creek. The portion of Highway 24 between the MacArthur Freeway (I-580) in Oakland to the Caldecott Tunnel, together with I-980 (between I-580 and the Nimitz Freeway (I-880)), is also known as the Grove Shafter Freeway.
As described on that page, construction of the Grove Shafter Freeway required the demolition of numerous established residential and commercial blocks.
Although not pertaining to Oakland, the section of SR 24 which runs from the Caldecott Tunnel to I-680 has been designated a scenic highway due to the lovely suburban surroundings.
