The John Perkins Center for Community Transformation is somehow affiliated with Patten University in Fruitvale. It's a nonprofit, but there's not a lot of information on the internet about what its activities consist of.
It looks like it was started by John Perkins: "Perkins, 80, is an American civil rights activist who founded and is president of the John M. Perkins Foundation in Jackson, Miss. He said he is honored to be associated with Patten University and the center.
"I am so glad to be associated with a center that has made one of its main goals to reach out to children who are lost or have lost their way,'' he said. "We expect other wonderful things to happen through the Perkins Center there. This is only the beginning."" [Contra Costa Times]
In 2010, it hosted 2 performances of "Great is Thy Faithfulness," a play by the Center's executive administrator Alicia Garcia, at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts downtown. According to the same Contra Costa Times article that includes info about the performance, Garcia was working on setting the Center up as a part of the Safe Place center which would make it a place where runaways would be able to come for help.
