The Lincoln Highway is one of the first transcontinental highways across the United States, and turned 100 years old in 2013. It was the first national monument to Lincoln (the Lincoln Monument didn't come about until 1922).
It passes/passed through Oakland; the original route went to the foot of Broadway, where people could take a ferry to San Francisco for the final leg.
Annalee Allen's column this Sunday (6/23/2013) will have more info. Groups are setting out from San Francisco and New York to drive the original route. Oakland and Alameda County will be involved in the 100th anniversary celebration.
