Things to do on MLK Day, 2014

  • Monday, Jan 20th: "MLK Jr. Day of Service: Community Clean-Up"- Come out and make a difference in your community while celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy w/ your Fremont family, AmeriCorps mentors, and community members. The event will be held at Fremont High School(4610 Foothill Blvd, Oakland,CA) where there will be a general check-in at 8:30am(volunteers will be assigned shirts and then they'll be split into teams). Council member Noel Gallo will be present for opening remarks, followed by team icebreakers. By 9am each team will head out to their assigned area w/ team leaders(maps will be provided) and then by 12pm each team will meet back at Fremont High for lunch and closing remarks.

  • Sunday, Jan 19th: “In the Name of Love,” a Tribute to MLK – Mayor Jean Quan will present the City of Oakland Citizen Humanitarian Award to Carol Johnson for her outstanding work on behalf of the Oakland community at “In the Name of Love,” the 12th Annual Musical Tribute honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event, which begins at 7:00 p.m., will be held at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center, 1547 Lakeside Drive. “In the Name of Love,” produced by Living Jazz, is an extensive civic and cultural event that pays homage through music, to one of the greatest humanitarians of our time. The 2014 musical entertainment includes singer/songwriter/actor Martin Luther McCoy, the Marcus Shelby Jazz 

    Orchestra featuring the Dynamic Ms. Faye Carol, the powerful 65-voice Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and the 275-voice Oakland Children’s Community Choir backed up by the Oaktown Jazz Workshops. Nikki Thomas from KBLX will serve as emcee. 

  • Friday, Jan 17: Speeches of a Dream: MLK Celebration- 7:00-9:00 pm, Malonga Casquelord Center for the Arts, 1428 Alice Street. Join the Open Mic Celebration of the life and legacy of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. Share poetry, art, music or song. When developing materials for the Open Mic, participants are encouraged to consider how they would respond to one of Dr King's most persistent and urgent questions What are you doing for others?"   • Monday, Jan 20, 7:00-6:00: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Camp. Downtown Oakland YMCA, 2350 Broadway. Campers have the opportunity to explore nature, find new talents, try new activities, gain independence and make lasting friendships through a unique mix of activities that focus on developmental assets, the building blocks that teach children how to make positive and intelligent decisions throughout life. During this special holiday camp, campers will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a community garden service project and visit “Remember Them” Champions for Humanity monument. Participants will learn more about Dr. King’s dream and his work with the hopes of inspiring campers to develop and accomplish their very own dreams. Breakfast, lunch and a snack are provided.   • Monday, Jan 20 9:00-noon: Day of Service, Martin Luther King, Jr. Regional Shoreline, 6775 Oakport Street. Day of Service volunteers will perform a shoreline cleanup along the east side of the shoreline and plant native plants at the Martin Luther King Grove.   • ​Monday, Jan 20, 9:00-noon: Day of Service at Peralta Hacienda – 2465 34th Avenue. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is ‘What are you doing for others?’” Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. Lend a hand at Peralta Hacienda Historical Park by picking up trash, pulling weeds, removing non-native plants and making our park a more beautiful place. Be sure to wear clothes appropriate for gardening – long pants, sturdy closed-toe shoes, sun hat, sunscreen and gardening gloves. Tools will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own to ensure that there are enough for all participants. Bring water and snacks.   • Monday, Jan 20, 10:00-noon, 16th Annual "Make the Dream Real." McClymonds High School, 2607 Myrtle Street. Shakti Butler, PhD, filmmaker and Founder & Creative Director of World Trust, will be the keynote for this event. She is a dynamic educator in the field of racial equity. Following the free event, a luncheon will be served. The focus of this event is on equity in education and making the dream of racial equality real for all children.   • Sunday, January 19, 9am-1pm, 6300 Moraga Ave., 2014 Day of Service- Montclair Community Work Day, Montclair Village (meet at the basketball court).The purpose of the event is to improve infrastructure, clean and clear overgrowth of plants and trees, and remove trash and debris in Montclair Park and the walkways along Moraga. Bags, pickers, vests, and latex gloves will be provided for litter removal. Paint, rollers, and gloves will be provided for graffiti removal, as well as supplies for beautification projects.
