On August 7, 1906, Alicia farmer John Hammond was found dead from a gunshot wound. A week after the discovery his farm hand Heber Baker was arrested. He confessed to killing Hammond at the request of Hammond's wife Rosa Hammond. The two were confined to the Powhatan jail throughout the trial. Judge L.B. Poindexter refused Rosa Hammond her unweaned baby to stay in jail with her.
