History of Organization
CFSA began in 1979 through the efforts of a small group of farmers, gardeners, and consumers in North and South Carolina. The organization achieved status as a North Carolina not-for-profit organization in 1982 and earned its federal 501c3 tax exempt status in 1989. In 2007 CFSA launched its Farm Incubator Program with support from Ben & Jerry's. CFSA has been instrumental in communicating regulatory changes and policy alerts to its members and has worked to protect small-farmers from undue regulatory burdens under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FMSA). In 2014, CFSA stepped in to save the Lomax Incubator Farm after Cabarrus County, NC cut funding for the initiative.
