The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a feast day on September 14 to celebrate the cross as a symbol. The mission was named in honor of this event. The city and county were named for the mission. It is listed as California Historical Landmark 332.

The smaller chapel built in the mission style, was constructed in 1931.
