Rainwater that falls on the sidewalks, roads, and buildings is combined with the sewer system and after get treated it moves into the Pacific Ocean. This could lower the oxygen level and harm the aquatic organisms. If we don't take action soon it could also harm our local water table. SFSU has three projects that are currently reusing the water from either the rain or within its own building.

"From Sky to Soil" Project, a rain harvesting system that locates on top of the Recycle Center, collects 12,000 gallons of rainwater per year and use it to water the 6,000 square feet plants and then it reuses those water for other projects.  "Science Corridor Bioswale" is another rain harvesting system on top of the Science Building roof that collects 60,000 gallons of rainwater per year and use those water to water the swale, a rain garden, home to many birds, bees, and butterflies. While, the Mashouf Wellness Center has its own water system, it stores and filters water from the pools, sinks, and showers and delivers it to toilets and irrigations. This system recovers 10,000 gallons of water per week from pool filter backwash, and 4,700 gallons of water per week from shower and lavatory fixtures. Additionally, it reclaims 8,000 gallons of water per week for toilet and urinal flushing, and 6,000 gallons of water per week for irrigation.

SFSU is doing their part of role of reusing as much as water as possible because campus as big as SFSU uses a lot of water per day.
