A neighbourhood antiwar and social justice group organizing in west Toronto since 2002.
We hold frequent public forums, participate in city-wide antiwar mobilizations and demonstrations, and lobby local politicians and representatives.
We are members of the Toronto Coalition to Stop the War and the Canadian Peace Alliance. You're welcome to join us.

We wanted to share an event in the neighbourhood: Manif Casseroles Toronto - a Quebec style anti-austerity demonstration. Bring pots and pans! Let's get our neighbours out in to the streets to make some noise against austerity and to show solidarity with the 'Maple Spring' in Quebec.

Budget 2011: Warfare or Welfare?

The 2011 budget threatens to cut more funding from social services, in order to pay for fighter jets and the endless war in Afghanistan. New fighter jets are estimated to cost $30 billion, which could provide $1000 to every person in Canada, or cover the entire annual federal health care budget. Meanwhile there is growing poverty and hunger in our community and across the country. Join a community forum to discuss what the budget priorities could be.

This 78-minute film shows the life and times of American historian Howard Zinn (1922-2010), author of "The People's History of the United States." This classic work has sold more than two million copies since first published in 1980. Zinn, a socialist, was active in the civil rights movement from its beginning, and actively opposed both the Vietnam and Iraq wars.

KAIROS (http://www.kairoscanada.org) is a social justice and human rights project jointly sponsored by the national offices of 11 Canadian church denominations and organizations. It was formed in 2001, uniting the work of 10 ecumenical coalitions which had been working on various justice issues since the late 60’s. KAIROS’ national office is at 310 Dupont St (at Spadina) in Toronto. It has 21 staff plus 80 local grassroots groups across Canada, three of which are in Toronto. KAIROS also works with 21 partner agencies in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
CIDA recently terminated government matching grants for KAIROS projects, thereby ending a 35-year funding relationship. The Minister for International Development said that the work of KAIROS no longer corresponded to CIDA’s priorities. But the Minister of Immigration implied that KAIROS support for Palestinian projects was anti-Semitic.
JOHN DILLON is a native of Sarnia, Ont., and graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1970. He began work in Toronto in 1973 as a researcher with GATT-Fly (later Ecumenical Coalition for Economic Justice), an economic justice coalition sponsored by several Christian denominations.
John has continued to work based in Toronto for the past 37 years as an economic researcher and educator. In addition to numerous background studies and other publications, he is the principal author of two books, “Power to Choose” (1981) on Canada’s energy policy, and “Turning the Tide: Confronting the Money Traders” (1997). Since the presidency of Richard Nixon, he has extensively analyzed the Breton Woods financial institutions, the IMF and the World Bank.
Over the years John has frequently worked as a resource for various international justice initiatives in the NGO sector, notably the Common Frontiers project (with Mexico), the Hemispheric Social Alliance, the Jubilee (Millennium) Debt Initiative, and networks concerned with climate change, amongst many others. He has also participated in numerous international conferences and meetings.

Energy economist John Foster will present a rarely told story about Afghanistan – plans for a natural gas pipeline to link Central and South Asia via Kandahar. There is a rivalry for control of Central Asia’s oil and gas - how does Afghanistan fit in? Over the past year, he has presented this topic in talks across Canada, and in a Toronto Star op-ed. A report on this subject published last year by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives made front-page banner headlines in the Globe and Mail. He has contributed to a new anthology published by Black Rose Books: Afghanistan and Canada: Is there an alternative to war? (for sale at the event).
John Foster is an energy economist and an expert on the world oil scene. He has a unique combination of work experience - with the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank and two oil companies (BP and Petro-Canada). He has worked in more than thirty countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Born in London England, he graduated from Cambridge University in economics and law. He lives in Kingston, Ontario.

As the death toll of Canadian soldiers deployed to Afghanistan mounts, so falls public support for the Afghan War. In 2008, the Conservative government of Stephen Harper and the Liberals under Stéphane Dion joined forces to extend Canada’s role in Afghanistan for an additional two years. Had the Liberals not backed the Conservatives, Canadian soldiers would already be coming home. From August 1 of this year onward, the blood of every additional Canadian soldier and every additional Afghan civilian killed, is on the hands and consciences of the Conservative-Liberal Alliance.
In the meantime, the continued civilian bombings and NATO encroachments into Pakistan are breeding resentment among the local population, building support for Taliban resistance. According to David Cullender, counter-insurgency advisory to US General Petraeus, drone (robotic planes) strikes have killed approximately 700 Pakistani civilians so far in 2009.
Join us for a discussion about what is really happening with the War in Afghanistan and why we can’t wait until 2011 for Canadian troops to come home.

In the last few weeks, the Government of Sri Lanka has escalated its attacks on the country’s Tamil population, provoking a humanitarian crisis affecting hundreds of thousands of people. United Nations aid workers have been shelled in actions that some UN spokespersons have declared violate the Geneva Conventions. Please join Davenport Neighbours for Peace for a discussion about what’s happening and what we can do to stop this humanitarian disaster.

Lift the embargo on food, medicine, and other essential items. 4. Stop the indiscriminate bombings and shellings of civilians.

Adopt a United Nations Human Rights Council Emergency Resolution calling for an end to the massive human rights violations against Tamils. 2. Establish a United Nations monitoring mission in Sri Lanka with a mandate to report on all human rights violations and humanitarian issues.

(Charges have already been dropped against seven of the 18 – a youth is currently awaiting a verdict from the trial in which the prosecution’s own witnesses contradicted the crown’s theory. Nevertheless, three men are still in solitary confinement in Toronto’s Don Jail.)
