First of America was the Kalamazoo-based bank that acquired Erie State Bank on New Year's Day 1988 and later sold the ex-Erie State Bank branches to Society National Bank out of Cleveland on October 1, 1992 (Society would later merge with Key Bank in 1996) to prepare for it's acquisition of Security Bank & Trust on March 20, 1993 and with it the Southgate Tower. First of America itself merged with another Cleveland-based bank, this one being National City Bank, on October 31, 1998.
