WikiMedia Image Tompkins County, named in honor of Daniel D. Tompkins, who served as Governor of New York and Vice President of the United States, is a county within New York State located in the center of northwest New York. Tompkins County contains the City of Ithaca, the county seat, and contains the entire Ithaca-Tompkins MSA.

Tompkins County was founded in 1817, covers 476 square miles, and had a 2000 population of 96,501.
