If you are gardening/farming, you will soon probably have problems with slugs (especially if you're growing leafy greens). This is a nice article that shows a number of ways to deal with this problem.

If you are out and about (perhaps hiking in Redwood Regional Park or other nature areas), you may see slugs in the wild. The most glorious of the slugs is the banana slug. Huge, majestic, and yellow/green/brown, seeing a banana slug will surely be one of the highlights of your time in the nature of Oakland! KQED ran a great piece about the science of slug slime.

If you know of other slug types that are in the area or have other slug info to contribute, please add it here!
